I wanted to send you all a quick message of hope and to boost your morale during this challenging time.

Over the past few weeks I have been waiting to see what is truly needed before writing this blog and what I really feel is needed more than anything else this time is MINDFULNESS and SELF CARE!

There are oodles of people and organisations offering free classes and lessons on how to use Zoom and all manner of other online resources etc – but what I feel is truly needed now and what is being missed is mindfulness and a cheery disposition to get you through when things seem so bleak and disorganised.

By now – those of you who are wanting to offer ” online ” classes will have done that – so bravo and well done for adapting to the ever changing landscape we find ourselves in. You may be “Zooming” away or using “Facebook Live” or various other platforms. So first of all give yourselves a pat on the back for getting yourselves organised and online so quickly.

I do not want to make this too long as I feel we are being bombarded with info at the moment so I will simply give you 5 EASY TIPS for improving your situation moving forward:

1. TAKE TIME FOR YOU EACH DAY: this is super important at the moment so make sure you give yourself at least 15 minutes each morning before you start and 15 minutes at the end of each day to simply relax and breathe and calm your nervous system. Just breathe in and out slowly for 15 minutes or listen to some soothing music while sitting quietly. If you are a client – you will see me posting ideas on the VIP Facebook page. If you are not – you can head to my personal Christine Denny Facebook Page and you will find meditations and sound healings I am offering there that you can access and save for your own personal use. It is all free and my way of giving something back. Please feel free to share these with your students and parents too if you feel it would be of assistance to them.

2. TURN OFF THE NEWS: that’s right. I highly recommend that you turn off the news. The constant drone of what’s going on is repetitive and disheartening I find. So turn it off. Check in for 5 minutes at the beginning and end of each day and otherwise – let it go. Watching all that negativity and fear based media over and over is not good for your mental health. So get what you need and get out.

3. QUARANTINE YOUR PHONE AND INTERNET: Again I think it imperative to turn your internet off at anytime when you are not actively using it. get off those facebook threads as they lead you to constantly be looking at reminders of what is going on. Again – it is a rabbit hole that you will quickly find yourself trapped in and heading down down down. So – check your emails in the morning and then get off until you need the internet for online classes etc. Otherwise you will find your time disappearing and nothing will get done in your days.

4. IF YOU CANT CHANGE YOUR SITUATION – CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE TO IT: This is one of the wisest things I ever heard and it is so true. So take back your power. We may be powerless as to when this will all end and how it will progress etc. But we have one great power and that is how we choose to react and respond to it all. So if you find yourself talking negatively, feeling depressed, feeling overwhelmed, complaining and whingeing – just stop it! Decide to focus on all the good things around you and choose gratitude for what you do have as opposed to focusing on what you do not have. This is a great piece of advice to pass on to all your studio members too. Take back your power and choose to respond in a calm, grounded and cheerful way. It is all we can do.

5. REMEMBER WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER: there should be great comfort in this simple truth as we are all in this bubble together. So make good use of the time and use it to decide exactly who you want to be and how you want to be when this is all over and we all pop out the other end. Some people will choose to fall into a negative pattern of complaining etc and others will use it as a time to redefine who they are and what really matters to them. I have found that I am becoming much clearer on what is important to me and how I wish to be in the world. And you can choose that path too. If you use this as a time of redefinition – both personally and professionally – when we pop out the other end you will be one of those people who feel empowered, enthusiastic and energised – and then the whole experience will have bettered your life and world view. So – be focused and use the time wisely.Really use the time to cut away the things that no longer work for you and to plant new seeds and ideas that really appeal to you and sit well in the reframing of your life and business.

So – that is it from me.

Can you believe that it is already the end of March 2020!

Wow!

So by now the thrill of starting the new year may have well and truly left you ha ha ha and you may be starting to feel a little depleted! So this is the time where you need to be super vigilant with regards to your own energy and the vibe that you are sending out into your dance school and dance classes.

So often I have had teachers tell me that their students are really stressed and worried and anxious etc etc and they don’t know what to do about it.But then I look around that studio and see that it is all coming from the top. That is, the teacher and/or studio principal is stressed and rushed and anxious!

So remember – if you as a teacher are stressed and anxious and uptight then expect your students to mimic that.

The solution is to actively try to leave the stress of the outside world at the door – the same way your would tell your students to do just that. Try to see your studio and your tap classes [ or any dance class for that matter ] as your sanctuary. A place where you can relax, be free and express yourself through the art of dance. And try to encourage this attitude in your students too.

Make their dance classes a place where they can experiment, be free and be safe to try different things.

I think we sometimes forget what a gift it is to teach dance.

We forget that music, rhythm and dance feed our souls.

We forget that to dance is to be free.

We forget that creativity and imagination are life giving and joyful expressions of who we are.

So today – I just want you to pause and think about the environment you create in your dance school and dance classes.

Are you always over scheduled and under prepared for class – rushing in at the last minute to start?

Are you always yelling and screaming and saying hurry up?

Have classes become all about winning trophies and attending comps?

If you are trapped in this loop – you may want to look at some measures to bring more joy back into your classes as this will have a huge impact on your students.

From my own experience, when you are prepared, on time and joyful during class – your students will also arrive prepared, on time and joyful. They will want to be there and they will want to be on time because they know that is the paradigm you have set and expect.

And if you are looking to excel – make it about ” being the best you can be and loving every minute of it” as opposed to winning prizes. This really changes the intent of the classes and everyone can thrive and shine when simply wanting to do their best in a joyful and fun way! And the result may still be ” winning the prize” but the pressure element has been removed!

This is what I call the Ripple Effect!

So be really careful what mood and vibe you ripple out to your students as it will come racing back towards you like a tidal wave ha ha ah ha.

If you have too much on your plate – then let a few things go.

Remember – it is all about quality – not quantity!

Be joyful and happy and prepared in all your classes and watch that attitude come back to you!

I had such a great response from my last blog that I thought I would put another one out there for you all to enjoy.

So for this blog I want to chat briefly about the use of accent!

For me the use of accent is paramount in creating a full bodied, layered and textured sound. Without it the rhythmic component of the tapping becomes quite bland and not at all nice to listen too.

I am sure many of you have been at comps and witnessed the very popular use of funky music accompanied by bashed and bullied beats that make you feel like you are being hit over the head with a saucepan. It can be equally ineffective when all the beats are so soft they can hardly be heard.

The answer…… a skilful placement of accent!

The beauty of accent is that it highlights the rhythm and gives it colour. The accent allows the rhythm to pop and shine! So I highly recommend that you think carefully about where the accent is placed in all the steps and combos you teach, as explaining this to your students will make a huge impact.

I have found that explaining the mechanics of placing the accent in a step or combo to the class, really empowers them and excites their interest. Suddenly the step and what they are learning has new depth and interest. It is no longer – just the step! And it gives the more advanced students something more to play with too.

A great exercise to demonstrate this is the use of the ” single heel”, ” heels” – or paradiddle!

Firstly teach it the Aussie way = 1 Heel dig R = this has the accent on it
& Brush up R
2 Ball dig R
& Heel drop R

Repeat this 16 times really focusing on placing that accent on the Heel Dig on count 1

Then teach it the American way = 1 Heel drop L = this has the accent on it
& Heel dig R
2 Brush up R
& Ball dig R

Repeat this 16 times really focusing on placing that accent on the Heel Drop on count 1

You then explain how our Aussie version gives the step a very strong and bright sound, whilst in the second version when we start on the heel drop, the accent in that position gives the step a more mellow, laid back funky feel.

The ” Forward and Back” Combo in Tapatak Oz Teen Advanced One also give as great example of the effect changing the placement of the accent has. And with the recent updates – this combo is just super fun. It is one of my favourites and I never tire of teaching it ha ha ha! So you can use that with more advanced students too.

I would also have them create their own combos where they is a change in the accent so they can see firsthand the effect it has.Students love being creative and putting their own ideas forward too – so this is a great class exercise.

So my question to you today is this……. ” Is your tapping canvas full of colour?”

If it isn’t – you may want to spend some time adjusting that and watch the fun begin.

In my experience – a little bit of colour, which in the world of tap = accent, gives a lot of bang for your buck!

And the tip is this…….. when asking the students to perform exercises and combinations one at a time – which I feel is essential in a tap dance class – first of all set up the rest of the class to be holding time with a simple beat, whilst the soloist performs the step.

This works a treat!

For example: your class has just learned ” heels” = heel dig, brush up, step heel = 1&2&
